Why do they matter?

Why do they matter?

There are fewer than 14,600 Sumatran orangutans remaining in the wild.

The main threats to their survival in the wild include loss of habitat, poaching and human-orangutan conflict.

Orangutans threatened by deforestation, as a result of farmlands, logging, mining, and roads. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, starving populations of orangutans are driven to raiding crops, causing local villagers to retaliate.
